How to Choose the Right Activewear for Your Body Type

Activewear should be comfortable, supportive and flattering. But when it comes to selecting the activewear that best suits your body type, it can be a bit tricky. Different body types require different fits and styles — something that may not always match up with the activewear trends of the moment. That’s why we’ve put together some tips on finding the activewear that’s best for you.

Understand your body type and build

This is key to finding activewear that fits and flatters your figure. Knowing the characteristics of each body type will help you recognize which pieces are best for your own shape.

For pear-shaped bodies, look for activewear with a high waistband that shows off your narrow waist and balances out your hips. Tankinis or bikinis with high-set bottoms will cinch in your waist and create a flatter silhouette.

If you have an apple body shape, activewear that offers more coverage on top can help to balance out the midsection. Avoid activewear with boxy shapes as they can make you look larger than you are. A one-piece swimsuit with a V-neck or scoop neck will help to minimize the waist area and draw attention away from your midsection.

Hourglass body shapes are defined by their proportionally balanced shoulders, chest and hips along with a trim waistline. Look for activewear that creates an accentuated silhouette like high-waisted shorts or tights, racerback-style tops, and activewear with detailed panels or cut outs to draw attention to your curves.

Athletic body types are usually characterized by a smaller bust and wider shoulders. Look for activewear that offers more coverage in the chest area such as halter tops and pieces with V-neck necklines.
